In general, when you find an attorney, they will work as a lawyer in order to provide a practical application of the law and their own personal knowledge and experience in order to help you solve your specific legal problem or to help advance your own interests depending on the nature of the situation. Some lawyers will specialize in the law and cases which go to trial and are referred to as trial attorneys. This typically consists of using their knowledge of the rules of conduct governed by the law in order to represent a client being accused of a wrong, or conversely representing their clients interest(s) against a party who has wronged their client.
The authorities and roles of attorneys varies a fair bit across different countries and local jurisdictions. In the United States, clerks or paralegals who assist attorneys are not referred to as lawyers, but this is not the case in all countries. The U.S. Also requires that attorneys must be a graduate from a law school and pass a state bar exam before he or she may legally practice law. Fail to finish school or pass the exam, and you do not have a right to be a practicing attorney.
The professional organization in the U.S. And Canada who focuses their energy on improving the standards of practice for trial lawyers is the American College of Trial Lawyers. The association has been around since 1950 and engages in a large number of activities in order to help further the trial attorney profession.
